Monday 16th November

Second Round Surrey midweek floodlit Under 18 County Cup

Croydon 0 v Chipstead 5

Chipstead scored 5 against Croydon to progress to the third round of the Under 18 Surrey midweek floodlit County Cup. Chipstead were again short of players being hit by injuries and also suffering withdrawals on the day from Will Lancefield (illness) and Connor Gavigan (knee). But it was Chipstead who had the early pressure but it took to the 15th minute before in-form forward Ryan Robinson had a shot just wide of the upright. 2 minutes later Chipstead keeper Ryan Humpage was called in to action moving smartly to his left to save a shot from just outside the box. Central defender Matt Hilton who had already played a full 90 minutes for his school in the afternoon, came close after 25 minutes just volleying wide from a Cameron Watt corner. On the half hour Chipstead finally took the lead when a thumping shot from central midfielder Anthony Childs was only parried by the keeper and Robinson was first to react to drive the ball in to the net. Chipstead continued to apply most of the pressure and Watt fired dangerously across the face of the goal and Childs stung the keepers hands with another ferocious shot. Chipstead finally got a second after 40 minutes when wide player George Thornton was up-ended and the Croydon keeper was unable to keep a well taken free-kick from Watt out of the net. Thornton himself went close on the stroke of half time but this time the keeper was equal to the challenge.

Jake Wilgoss who had also played a school match in the afternoon was replaced by Gregg Pettifor in midfield for the second half and Chipstead came out really fired up. Watt went close after 50 minutes with another free-kick after a foul on forward Lewis Longhurst and Robinson had a shot saved at the near post. Childs added Chipstead's third in the 67th minute when Longhurst beautifully chipped a ball forward to meet his run and the midfielder finished from 12 yards. 10 minutes later the visitors added a fourth when keeper Humpage kicked a long ball forward which was well gathered by Longhurst who again found Childs who finished with aplomb. Longhurst himself almost got on the scoresheet in the 85th minute but his left foot shot following a good diagonal run just crept wide of the post. Watt shot over just a few minutes later and luckless Longhurst went close again but the keeper managed to somehow scramble his looping header off the line. Robinson nicked the fifth on the stroke of full time being first to react to a lose ball in the box after Ben Walters had helped on a corner from Pettifor. The back four of Walters, Hilton, Wood and Conroy deserve a mention for a very good defensive display.

Ryan Humpage (Matt Scola), Ben Walters, Matt Hilton, Ryan Wood, Reggie Conroy, Cameron Watt, Anthony Childs, Jake Wilgoss (Gregg Pettifor), George Thornton, Ryan Robinson, Lewis Longhurst.

First Round Ryman Youth League Cup

Leatherhead 4 v Chipstead 1

Chipstead flew out of the blocks and forced a corner in the first minute from which midfielder Jake Wilgoss had a shot turned away by the keeper. Forward Gregg Pettifor went close a minute later but the keeper again pulled out a good save to prevent the opener. After 4 minutes Chipstead did take the lead when a great corner from Cameron Watt was met by defender Matt Hilton but his header was again saved by the goalie, but forward Ryan Robinson reacted first and hooked the ball home from 6 yards. Chipstead continued to dominate but Leatherhead equalised after quarter of an hour when Chiptead failed to clear their lines and the midfielder fired home an unstoppable shot from 25 yards. Leatherhead then enjoyed a good spell and Chipstead keeper Matt Scola had to be alert to save down at his left hand post. Chipstead got back on top but were unable to restore the lead and the teams went in level at half time.

Chipstead again started the brighter and outstanding midfielder Will Lancefield almost scored Chipstead's second after 60 minutes just shooting wide following a great inter-change of passes with Watt. Then the game was turned completely on its head. Chipstead weakly lost possession on the half way line and a pass through the middle of the Chipstead defence was intercepted with what looked like a very well timed tackle from centre back Mike Walsh. There were no appeals from Leatherhead but the referee awarded a penalty which was scored by the grateful forward. Chipstead almost bounced straight back when lively wide player Cameron Watt cut inside but his shot from 20 yards just sailed over. After 67 minutes Chipstead were dealt another cruel blow when a free-kick was awarded against Hilton for a strong but fair challenge. The delivery in to the box saw keeper Scola blocked by the forward before the ball was driven home from 6 yards. This definitely knocked the stuffing out of Chipstead who started to waste possession and leave holes at the back as they tried to work their way back in to the game. Unfortunately in the 80th minute they got hit on the break and a good sweeping move down the right was well finished to add Leatherhead's fourth. Chipstead scored a consolation goal 5 minutes later when substitute striker Lewis Longhurst played a good ball forward for Lancefield who headed home at the second attempt. Again their was wonderment as the referee ruled out the goal presumably for off-side.

First Round Surrey midweek floodlit Under 18 County Cup

Chipstead 1 v South Park 0

Chipstead squeezed through to the second round of the Under 18 midweek floodlit Surrey County Cup when they beat South Park 1-0 at the High Road. Chipstead completely dominated the early exchanges and threatened on numerous occasions by playing a quick passing game, but it was the visitors who came closest to scoring - blasting over from 18 yards when they should have scored and dragging a shot wide of the far post without troubling Matt Scola in the Chipstead goal. Chipstead took the lead after 26 minutes when youngster George Thornton delivered an early cross from wide right which was met on the far post by Jamie Evans. His attempt on goal was well saved by the keeper but Ryan Robinson pounced on the rebound and with his back to goal acrobatically hit an over-head shot high in to the net. Matt Hilton was superb in the Chipstead defence and new recruit, under 17 Connor Gavigan looked very comfortable alongside him. The remainder of the half was fairly even but it looked like Chipstead had increased their lead just 5 minutes before half time when right back Ben Walters shot home following a corner from the left but the referee blew for a foul on the keeper.

Chipstead again started the half the brighter and almost increased their lead in the 52nd minute when Gregg Pettifor was set away down the right and his cross was met with a header from Evans which came back off the post. South Park however continued to cause problems -influential play-maker Matt Smith shot just over from a free-kick in the 65th minute and Scola in the Chipstead goal was called in to action just 5 minutes later saving superbly one-handed from a rasping shot from just outside the box. Chipstead's injury ravaged side began to tire badly in the last 15 minutes and South Park really should have equalised and sent the tie in to extra time. Their forward had a great chance to score with just 5 minutes remaining, but substitute keeper Ryan Humpage was quickly off his line to smother the shot and the same player shot high and wide on the stroke of full time. ChipstEad will play Croydon in the next round.

Ryman Youth League, Central Divison

Tooting and Mitcham 6 v Chipstead 1

Chipstead conceeded 6 losing to Tooting and Mitcham away from home in the Central Division of the Ryman Youth League. Bizarrely it was the Tooting keeper who was the busier but the home team had pace up front and made the best of the chances they created. Chipstead were without 5 regulars due to school commitments (Pettifor, Childs, Evans, Hilton and Munnery) and also Nicky Nutt due to illness. This gave Chipstead the opportunity to involve other under 17's in the squad and also promising under 16 players Myles McAneny (centre back) and Louis John (centre midfield). Chipstead started very slowly and Tooting should have done better when they hit Chipstead on the counter attack, but the forward blasted high over from 25 yards with players in support. Tooting hit the bar in the 15th minute but Chipstead weathered the early storm and skipper Jake Wilgoss had two shots in quick succession which were both saved by the keeper. Forward Ryan Robinson also went close but the keeper managed to smother the shot and up the other end the home forward dragged his shot wide without troubling Ryan Humpage in the Chipstead goal. The opener was scored in the 29th minute when the referee missed an obvious foul in the centre of the pitch and a lofted ball over the Chipstead defence was skilfully vollied home from 20 yards. 3 minutes later centre back Alfie Dean had to be withdrawn after badly twisting his knee forcing young McAneny in to fray. 5 minutes later a short pass in the Chipstead back line enabled the forward to nip in and add Tooting's second. Chipstead almost bounced back immediately but Robinson was just in an offside position when he shot a lose ball in to the net following a free-kick from the right. Once again Tooting took advantage and quickly added a third, reacting first to the lose ball after Humpage had saved low to his left. Centre back Ben Walters, who was carrying a groin injury, almost pulled one back, heading over from a free-kick but on the stoke of half time Wilgoss finally got a deserved goal for Chipstead firing high in to the net from a tight angle following a diagonal ball from the left.

Chipstead brought on under 17 keeper Matt Scola for the second half and really took the game to Tooting. Robinson had a shot smothered by the keeper following a neat pass from George Thornton and a minute later the same player had another shot clumsily parried on to the bar. 10 minutes later Robinson again tested the keeper and outstanding central midfielder Will Lancefield had his lob scrambled round the post in the 62nd minute. Afetr a period of intense pressure, Chipstead got caught with the sucker punch and Tooting increased their lead scoring with a shot from 20 yards which somehow squirmed in to the bottom right of the net. Chipstead continued to press and Wilgoss had his shot saved by the keeper after cutting inside but again Tooting responded and scored again with a great half-volley after a cut back from the right. Midfielder Cameron Watt shot just over for Chipstead in the 77th minute but Tooting added another just 3 minutes later - seemingly kicking the ball out of Scola's hands as he came sliding out to gather an over-hit pass from midfield. Defender Mike Walsh came close to getting a consolation goal for Chipstead in the 82nd minute but his shot on target lacked power after cutting inside following a great run down the right.

Ryan Humpage (Matt Scola), Mike Walsh, Ben Walters, Alfie Dean (Myles McAneny), Reggie Conroy, George Thornton (Louis John), Will Lancefield, Jake Wilgoss, Cameron Watt, Ryan Robinson, Lewis Longhurst.

FA Youth Cup - First Qualifying Round

Maidstone United 3 v Chipsted 0

Chipstead crashed out of the FA Youth Cup losing 3-0 away from home to Maidstone United. The hosts started strongly and Chipstead keeper Ryan Humpage was called in to early action in the 10 minute when he saved a stinging shot from the edge of the box. He had to be at his best again just 2 minutes later when he just managed to get his fingertips to the ball as the attacker tried to dance around him. Chipstead gradually started to play themselves in to the game and Gregg Pettifor had a great chance to open the scoring but his shot was smothered by the keeper and turned away for a corner. Shortly after, Pettifor had another chance but shot just over the bar after being put through by strike partner Lewis Longhurst. The first goal finally arrived after 25 minutes - Chipstead had a free-kick wide on the right but the delivery was plucked out the air by the keeper and thrown quickly to the left wing. The nippy winger outpaced the Chipstead right flank and cut the ball back from the bye-line which was readily dispatched by Maidstone's Faulkes. Maidstone added a second 5 minutes before half time, scoring on the half-volley from the edge of the penalty box following a corner which was punched clear.

Chipstead had to withdraw right back Nicky Nutt at half time through illness and just 5 minutes after the re-start had to withdraw left back Ryan Wood with a hip injury. Chipstead reverted to three at the back and really took the game to their hosts putting them under pressure for long spells. In the 66th minute a well worked short corner was delivered in to the box and Longhurst fired a low shot which cannoned back off the post. Seconds later lively youngster Cameron Watt picked up the lose ball, passed inside to tenacious central midfielder Will Lancefield who unleashed a ferocious shot which the keeper superbly managed to palm away. A minute later Maidstone added a third completely against the run of play when a speculative shot from 30 yards deflected off the defender and crept in low at the right hand post. Chipstead continued to battle bravely and the Maidstone keeper pulled of another great save, this time from Ryan Robinson after he turned and shot after collecting a pass from Lancefield. Within a minute, the keeper was again called in to action saving high to his right from Longhurst. Still Chipstead pressed forward and Watt shot high and Pettifor also headed one over from an Alfie Dean free-kick. It just wasn't going to be Chipstead's night - Maidstone were a strong team but the scoreline flattered them and Chipstead certainly deserved a couple of goals on the night.

Ryman Youth League, Central Division

Chipstead 3 v Carshalton Athletic 5

Three times Chipstead took the lead in their first home game of the new season. The turning point in the game was the loss of influential central defender Nicky Nutt when Chipstead were leading 3-2. His defensive partner Alfie Dean also had an outstanding game but Chipstead got hit three times on the break to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Ryan Robinson took the lead for Chipstead after 12 minutes following a superb ball-winning tackle and run from the half way line by skipper Jake Wilgoss. Mike Walsh almost added a second soon after but his shot was cleared off the line and the visitors bounced back to deservedly equalise after 30 minutes with a header direct from a corner. Lewis Longhurst shot just over for Chipstead 2 minutes later following a great cross from youngster Cameron Watt and Nutt worked wonders to get back to clear one off the Chipstead line. Walsh restored Chipstead's lead in the 35th minute looping a shinned shot over the keeper after collecting a pass from Wilgoss and Anthony Childs almost added a third but screwed his shot wide just before the half time whistle.

The second half was fairly even for the first 20 minutes but Carshalton drew first blood when they equalised following good approach play down the left. Chipstead bounced straight back and Dean picked up a corner cleared to the edge of the box and fed Robinson who skipped round the keeper to add his second and restore Chipstead's lead. Carshalton refused to lie down and equalised again following a left wing cross, although the forward looked to be in an offside position. Robinson had the ball in the net again just 2 minutes later but the young striker was adjudged to have handled. Nutt then had to be replaced having been in the wars all evening and Chipstead quickly lost their way. Chipstead had a pass intercepted on the half way line and following a quick break the forward nodded home the cross giving Carshalton the lead for the first time. Chipstead pushed forward, trying and get something from the game and were hit by a fast break down the right and a cross which was forced over the line from close range.

Ryan Humpage (Matt Scola), Reggie Conroy, Alfie Dean, Nicky Nutt (George Thornton), Jamie Evans, Cameron Watt, Anthony Childs, Jake Wilgoss, Mike Walsh, Ryan Robinson, Lewis Longhurst (Gregg Pettifor).

FA Youth Cup - Preliminary Round

Tonbridge Angels 1 v Chipstead 2

Chipstead progressed to the First Qualifying Round of the prestiguous FA Youth Cup defeating Tonbridge Angels 2-1 away from home at the Longmead Stadium. Chipstead almost opened the scoring after just 4 minutes but centre forward Gregg Pettifor saw his shot rustle the side netting following a swift break down the right by wide man Mike Walsh. Pettifor came close again 10 minutes later, this time volleying over after defender Ben Walters whipped in a cross after breaking down the right. Chipstead deservedly took the lead after 23 minutes when Walsh latched on to a headed clearance from the defence and smashed a half-volley in to the net from 20 yards. 5 minutes later Tonbridge drew level from the spot when an eagle-eyed linesman adjudged Jamie Evans to have hand-balled on the edge of the area. Everyone in the ground was astounded apart from the assistant. Chipstead almost restored the lead 5 minutes later but midfielder Anthony Childs just dragged his shot wide of the far post following an interchange of passes down the right. Evans then broke down the left and put in a great cross which Pettifor just failed to get above and the ball sailed over the bar.

Following the break Tonbridge had the first chance but headed wide following good approach play down the right. The game continued to ebb and flow and after 75 minutes Pettifor almost opened his account but again just headed over following a great run and cross from young substitute Cameron Watt. Tonbridge started to gain a upper hand, looking the fitter of the two teams but it was Chipstead forward Lewis Longhurst who went close after 80 minutes just volleying wide a cross from Childs. With just 5 minutes to go Angels almost snatched the winner - Chipstead headed out a free-kick and the advancing midfielder lashed the ball against the left hand post. The linesman had however already flagged for offside. The winner came in the 87th minute when defender Ryan Wood cleared from his own area, Longhurst flicked the ball on to Pettifor who rolled in skipper Jake Wilgoss who cleverly lifted the ball over the advancing keeper to deservedly secure the tie for Chipstead.

Chipstead play the winners of Maidstone and Crawley Downs in the next round.

Ryman Youth League, Central Division

Whyteleafe 1 v Chipstead 1

In their first game in the Ryman Youth League, Chipstead found themselves 1-0 down after just 50 seconds away to Whyteleafe in torrential rain at Church Road. A hopeful ball in to the box from wide left was controlled by full back back Jamie Evans but his clearance unfortunately hit the pressurising forward's backside and ricocheted in to the net. Chipstead then looked wobbly for 10 minutes and the home team drove several crosses in to the box but were unable to grab a second goal. Chipstead then started to come in to the game and forward Gregg Pettifor went close with a volley after 20 minutes following a good knock-down by partner Lewis Longhurst. Pettifor again went close 10 minutes later, this time rounding the keeper following a superb through ball from Will Lancefield but his shot was cleared off the line. Whyteleafe immediately struck back and keeper Ryan Humpage had to be very alert to clear the danger on the edge of the box. Chipstead continued to press and Jake Wilgoss was just unable to jump high enough to convert a cross from Longhurst and Pettifor had another one cleared off the line from a header just outside the 6 yard box. Just before the half time whistle Lancefield thought he had scored the equaliser but his header from an Evans free-kick just looped over the bar.

Chipstead started the second half where they had left off, Ben Walters flashing a cross just wide of the far post. After 52 minutes Chipstead got their deserved equaliser when Pettifor was brought down in the box and dusted himself off to score from the spot. Whyteleafe then threatened for 10 minutes trying desperately to restore the lead but it was Chipstead who again went closest to scoring when Wilgoss and then Cameron Watt were both thwarted by point blank saves from the Whyteleafe keeper. Chipstead continued to press and centre back Alfie Dean almost secured the points for Chipstead but his 85 minute header just grazed the crossbar.

Gregg Pettifor equalised soon after with a well taken goal but the 17's restored their lead just 10 minutes later. Dan Lilley then shot across the keeper in to the corner of the net to equalise a second time for the Youth team, sending the teams in level at half time. The under 18's had the better of the second half but their younger counterparts continued to threaten down both flanks. Dan Lilley added his second and the match winner with 10 minutes remaining.

Chipstead 2 v Crystal Palace 6

The Youth team were resoundly beaten 6-2 by a very lively under 16 Crystal Palace academy side. Chipstead opened the scoring in the second minute when central midfielder Will Lancefield made a great run to head home a corner from Aaron George. The remainder of the half was very even with neither side creating too many chances. Chipstead almost added a second after 40 minutes when Mike Walsh delicately clipped the ball over the keeper but unfortunately the ball hit the underside of the bar and was hacked away. Palace equalised on the stroke of half time when Jordan Clark skipped down the left flank and rounded keeper Ryan Humpage.

Chipstead made 4 changes at half time and Palace significantly brought on a couple of stronger players. Within 5 minutes of the restart, Palace has scored two goals - the first from a penalty after the left winger out-paced the defence and was then brought down by substitute keeper Matt Scola. The second was smashed home from inside the box after the forward had turned Chipstead's right back inside out. Palace added a fourth after 65 minutes, finishing at the far post following a break and cross from the right and 5 minutes later they added another when the left winger cut inside and beat the keeper at the near post. After 80 minutes Palace scored their final goal with a well struck shot from 25 yards which nestled nicely in the bottom corner. Despite being over-run at times Chipstead continued to battle and scored a consolation goal just before the final whistle when Anthony Childs converted a penalty after trialist Dmitrijs Hmizs was upended in the box.

AFC Wimbledon 4 v Chipstead 0

AFC were very strong and took the lead with a headed goal after 15 minutes when the defence failed to clear a left wing cross. 5 minutes later they added a second from close range following a scramble in the box. Just before half time AFC scored twice more - converting the third following a cross from the right and adding the fourth from the edge of the box after intercepting a goal kick. Chipstead's young side remained upbeat and started the second half determined to restore a bit of pride. They worked tirelessly and a hard-fought performance saw them draw the second half 0-0. Despite the defeat there was some very promising performances and with regular players back from injury and holiday the squad looks nicely balanced for the coming season.
