It was a veritable game of two halves, as Chipstead visited Knaphill in the Combined Counties League Premier Division South on Saturday afternoon, & ultimately had nothing to show for their efforts, as the hosts stole all three points with two late goals
Chips started brightly, with three new faces in the starting eleven after last week's FA Cup defeat, & two more on the bench
They might have scored early on, as Zac Jakubowski robbed the defence, although his low cross was put out for a corner - Kacper Nozka took it, but skipper Robb Sheridan's powerful header was just over the target - the pair soon tried to connect from two more free-kicks, but they were overhit
However Chipstead did take the lead on 13 minutes, as Nozka flicked on a through ball with the outside of his right boot, Jakubowski ran on to it & calmly tucked it past the keeper and inside the far post
Richesse Mvoiki soon put a shot just wide of a post, but it was to be just a sighter, as he doubled the lead on 25 minutes with a sublime effort into the top corner past the despairing dive of the home keeper
The hosts tried to get back into the game, but only really tested Harvey Keogh in the Chips' goal with a free-kick & a corner during the remainder of the half
Knaphill changed their formation at the break, bringing on two subs, & this gave them a boost, as the momentum of the game changed
Evan Kelly had to make a solid challenge at the back to preserve the lead, but the home side did reduce the deficit on the hour mark, as their sub striker shot across Keogh & into the net
Yet it did seem as if Chipstead could hold on for the win, as they introduced their subs for fresh legs, although Cameron Lewis-Brown had to make a vital block to keep his side ahead
Keogh got down to push away another home free-kick, while Chips, on a rare break forward, saw Dela Desouza crudely taken out on the edge of the box, but sub Christopher Petrou's resultant free-kick was held by the keeper
The Knappers were awarded one at the other end, as the game entered added time, & their centre-forward glanced it home at the near post to draw the scores level
There was still time for Jakubowski to try a shot from distance to win it for the visitors, but it went just over the bar - back came the home side, who won a free-kick centrally - the defensive header clear fell nicely for the sub centre-half to fire it sweetly past Keogh & nick the win
Chipstead get the chance to bounce back quickly, when they visit Spelthorne Sports on Tuesday evening
