Chipstead returned to earth with a bump, as they came unstuck at Redhill, who preserved their 100% start in the league with a 5-0 victory on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon
Less than 48 hours earlier, Chips had played their best game of the season so far in their 3-1 win over Chessington & Hook in the FA Vase, but they were behind after just four minutes, as the home no. 10 beat Harvey Keogh low down at his near post to make it 1-0
Redhill had former Chipstead players Tommy Smith & Ethan Ford in their ranks, with Smith marshalling the centre of the defence & Ford marauding down the left - it was Smith who headed clear skipper Peter Wedgeworth’s dangerous free-kick into the home box, before Lee Quincey moved forward & had a shot blocked
It was Ford who doubled the lead after 20 minutes, hitting an unstoppable shot over Keogh, & he nearly made it 3-0, when his next effort hit the far post & bounced away to safety
It was 3-0 five minutes before halftime, as a free-kick just outside the Chips’ box was pushed away well by Keogh, but the follow-up was turned in, & that was the score at the break
Richesse Mvioki & Dela Desouza came on as subs for Chipstead for the second half, but it took Keogh with quick reactions at the back to prevent a fourth goal
Chips kept plugging away - Michael Dixon’s downward header was saved by the home keeper at the foot of a post, & the ball did soon go in the net, but the whistle had gone for a foul on the keeper
Wedgeworth put another free-kick over the bar, but their task was made harder, when Mvioki received a straight red card for a swing at an opponent under a challenge
In added time, Redhill’s no. 9 made it 4-0 with a touch-in at the far post, & there was still time for a fifth, when the no. 10 scored again on the break
The defeat sees Chipstead down to 18th in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division South table ahead of Saturday’s trip to Guildford City
