Chipstead bounced back from Monday’s 5-0 reverse at Redhill with a workmanlike performance to earn a 3-2 win at Guildford in their latest match in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division South on Saturday afternoon
With new signing Sam Carman starting in goal, & a few positional changes, Chips looked a completely different side from the outset, & took the lead after just three minutes - in their first real attack, good work by Peter Wedgeworth & Emmanuel Robe teed up Tijani Eshilokun, whose deflected shot deceived the home keeper & made it 1-0
Guildford tried for a quick reply, & a shot went just over the bar from a loose ball in the Chipstead defence - but the visitors tried to increase their lead, & Aaron Lamont’s through ball to Michael Dixon was just too long, before Elijah Hopwood tricked his way into the home box, but the move broke down
Carman made an early confidence-boosting high gather of a ball into his area, but he couldn’t prevent a Guildford equaliser, as their no. 10 soon broke through the middle, & lifted the ball over his head to make it 1-1
As Chips sought the lead again, Eshilokun put a great long ball forward up to Dixon, but the covering defender got back - Robe cut inside from the left, & unleashed a shot, which the keeper could only smother away for a corner - Kacper Nozka took it, but Richard Orlu’s downward header was kept out by the keeper’s feet
Wedgeworth took a short free-kick to Lamont, whose long floated ball found skipper Robb Sheridan at the far post, but his header went wide
Chipstead’s task theoretically became easier, as, for the second Saturday in a row, their opposition was reduced to ten men before halftime - for some reason the centre-forward kicked the ball away across the athletics track surrounding the pitch, earning himself a booking, which was quickly doubled for dissent, & he departed for an early bath
Chips quickly seized the initiative, as Wedgeworth’s pinpoint cross from the left was headed home by Dixon to give them a 2-1 interval lead
Lamont had the first effort of the second half, but was fouled as he shot over the bar - Wedgeworth’s resultant deep free-kick went just beyond the onrushing Sheridan
Guildford thought they had equalised for a second time, as the ball was bundled home from a corner, but the whistle had been blown for an infringement, & Wedgeworth nearly made them pay, when his long cross from the left almost embarrassed the home keeper at his far post
Chipstead introduced their subs to try to protect their lead, but Guildford soon made it 2-2 with a carbon copy of their first goal, as their no. 10 lofted another shot over Carman & into the net on 76 minutes
Yet Chips were back in front four minutes later, as great work by Robe down the right saw him cross the ball on to the head of sub Zak Jakubowski to make it 3-2
There was quickly a chance of a fourth, as a long ball forward saw the home keeper come rushing out of his area, & stop the ball high above his head with an outstretched hand - surprisingly he only received a yellow card and remained on the pitch
Chipstead pushed for another goal to kill off the game - Lamont had a shot charged down, but Jakubowski couldn’t turn home the rebound - Robe dazzled his way into the box, but a defender blocked his effort, before Jakubowski crossed deep from the right, but fellow sub Dela Desouza couldn’t volley it home
But it was Chips who claimed the three points, which lifts them to 13th in the league table, ahead of Tuesday night’s game against bottom side Epsom & Ewell at Corinthian-Casuals’ ground
