Chipstead showed great character to win through 4-3 at Camberley Town in their latest match in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Premier Division South on Saturday afternoon - they were 2-0 up in the first half-hour, got pegged back by halftime, went behind, yet scored two late goals to win the game
The match marked the first league start in goal for current under-18 keeper, 17-year-old Finnley Davenport, who was to have a fine game & put in a mature performance beyond his years, according to manager Justin Fevrier
The side started well, & could have taken the lead, as a tenacious tackle from Cameron Lewis-Brown saw the ball reach Ronaldo Flowers, who fed it through to Emmanuel Robe, who was just thwarted by the home keeper - yet Chips did take the lead on 13 minutes, & it was Robe on target, as a long throw from Aaron Lamont wide on the right glanced nicely off Melford Simpson for the nippy forward to shoot home for 1-0
It was nearly 2-0, when Tijani Eshilokun fed Peter Wedgeworth wide on the left, he found Robe unmarked at the far post, his volley hit the keeper, but the rebound bounced off Flowers at speed & landed on the roof of the net - Chipstead soon had another chance, as Eshilokun won the ball in midfield & fed Robe still free on the right, he turned it in low to Michael Dixon, whose touch went just wide of the far post
Another opportunity came as a Wedgeworth free-kick from the centre-circle dropped to Simpson, whose knock back saw Evan Kelly & skipper Robb Sheridan both unlucky not to score
Davenport’s first real action then came, as a long ball forward to the Camberley front line dropped to their no. 8, who saw Davenport save low down to his left
Chips’ second goal arrived on 32 minutes, as another Wedgeworth free-kick again found Simpson, the home defence didn’t really clear the ball, which Lamont lofted forward to Dixon, who scored sweetly on the turn to make it 2-0
Camberley got one back on 38 minutes, as their no. 11 shot through a crowd of Chipstead defenders, Davenport got down to parry well, but the no. 9 turned in the rebound for 2-1 - they were level two minutes later, as another attack saw Davenport parry twice, but the home skipper touched it home, & it was 2-2, which it remained until the break
Davenport was quickly back in action after the restart with a fine save from distance, then a comfortable catch from the follow-up, before collecting confidently another header at the far post soon after
Camberley did take the lead 3-2 on 64 minutes, as their no. 8 tucked home a loose ball just inside the far post, but sub Elijah Hopwood gave a sign of things to come, when he shot cleanly from 30 yards just inches wide with the keeper well beaten
Chips levelled it up at 3-3 on 83 minutes, as sub Dela Desouza fed Lamont, who was afforded the time & space to lift a delicious shot over the keeper and into the net from the edge of the area - the lads sensed they could yet win the game, & clinched it two minutes into added time, as Robe got away down the right, setting the ball back to Hopwood, who fired home, to the delight of his teammates
There was no time for a Camberley reply, & Chipstead returned home with all three points to lift them to 12th in the league table ahead of next Saturday’s second qualifying round tie in the Isuzu FA Vase at home to VCD Athletic
