Chipstead’s under-18s were unable to gain any reward for their part in an entertaining match v. Leatherhead in the Anderson Travel Isthmian League Youth Central Division on Monday night at the High Road losing 7-5 in a topsy-turvy encounter
Things looked bright early on, as the away side had an early penalty saved by Tyler Crawford in the Chips goal, then great work by George Craig teed up Tom Smith for the opener
Abel Vendrells had a shot deflected for a corner, but the 2nd goal came, when Tom Annetts was brought down in the box, & Craig scored from the penalty spot
Leatherhead got a foothold in the match, pulling one back just before halftime to make it 2-1
This galvanised them upon the restart, & Chipstead endured one of those spells of football, when every attack against them seemed to result in a goal
The visitors equalised, then quickly made it 3-2 - Vendrells thumped a post, but Chips couldn't stem the tide
Crawford saved one shot, but the rebound was turned home for 4-2, before three more goals in quick succession made it 7-2
Chipstead made their substitutions, & one of them, Josh Burr, had one shot deflected wide, before he chased a loose ball into the box & was brought down - Vendrells scored the penalty to make it 7-3
Vendrells then broke away again, & was denied by the keeper, but reacted quickest to the loose ball to turn it home for 7-4
Burr persevered again, rounding the keeper & scoring the 5th
A melee in the box saw Jaden Sandiford shoot just past the post, but Chips ran out of time, as it finished 7-5 - quite a game!
